Curriculum

The African University undergraduate curriculum shall be structured, student-centered and shall furnish students with a sound academic foundation for talent development. The undergraduate curriculum shall encourage and cultivate creative, intellectual, emotional, and moral discipline in the student. The faculty of African University shall specify the curricular content and performance standards of the integrated undergraduate curriculum. Key curricular features include:

  • Establish clear definition of growth sought for the student.
  • Emphasize professional development
  • Furnish early practical experiences.
  • Use significant problems to address the curricular principles.
  • Address curricular principles using engaging teaching methods such as cases, role modeling and simulation.
  • Use Modular academic scheduling.
  • Implement a simple and comprehensive assessment system to collect evidence of student growth. Includes elements such as end of module assessment followed by a break period with no classes or for remediation.
  • Revise the learner's program when satisfactory progress is not made in all areas.
  • Study the curriculum to discover ways to provide flexibility and greater benefit for learners.
  • Provide course orientation to outline academic expectations and provide big picture.
  • Use of seminars and small group to team building skills.
  • Integrate technology in academic life.
  • Minimize lectures as a common mode of instruction.
  • Use of co-curricular, internship and service learning experiences.
  • Promote faculty teaching teams.
  • Provide a core first year integrated liberal arts and science core curriculum for all first year students.
  • Foster strong student to student and student to faculty relationships through mentoring and advising.
