Principles

The Learning Principles are interlinked and integrated in the individual that performs them. They are presented here separately to facilitate instruction and learning at African University. The Learning Principles constitute the framework of a shared common learning experience of all African University students. The principles provide a rich context for faculty and students to engage in work that promote the aims of African University in particular and society at large.

Performance criteria for each developmental level of the Learning Principles shall be broad and linked as appropriate to specific courses. The purpose of the performance criteria shall be as follows: 1) Provide a common framework for faculty to communicate to students how each principle applies to different course contexts; 2) Furnish students with standards for performance and achievement of each principle in different courses; and 3) Provide faculty standards to evaluate and certify the achievement of each principle in various courses. An assessment system will be developed by the faculty of African University to determine that each graduate has a achieved competency in each principle.

The Learning Principles shall permeate the entire curriculum and not simply a set of courses or skills developed in specific courses. These principles constitute a set of common learning outcomes that furnish a shared intellectual core across disciplines that shall be offered at African University. Students shall be expected to develop their competence in these outcomes throughout the curriculum. The faculty is expected to integrate the Learning Principles in courses, curricula, and outcomes evaluation. The learning principles at African University are as follows:
